Species Count Tool - By James Mickley ( @mickley)
This tool takes advantage of the iNaturalist observations/species_count API to return a list of taxa and the number of observations for a given set of filters. It is especially useful as a data cleaning tool for finding species with few observations that might be incorrectly identified, cultivated, rare, interesting, or in need of more observations to be included in the vision model.

Instructions:
  • Use the Filters button to construct a search, for example, restricting to a place or project.
  • Click the Identify All Taxa button to to load all observations of the displayed taxa in iNaturalist's Identify view.
  • Click on the photo or number of observations of a taxon to load only that taxon in Identify view.
  • Click on the taxon name to open the iNaturalist taxon profile page.
Tips:
  • Searches can be shared by copying the page URL.
  • The tool loads ~100 taxa at a time. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to load more taxa.
  • The introduced, native, threatened, and endemic terms rely on iNaturalist data that may not be correct for a given place.
  • Unfortunately, the tool is not able to return taxa below the species level, though you can restrict the high species rank to subspecies and below.
  • The number of observations applies to the search terms; it may not include all observations in a particular place. For example, if searching for Needs ID, common taxa may pop up with one observation.
  • Filtering by Total Observations per Taxon (worldwide) is useful for finding under-observed taxa to target for the vision model.
  • Filtering by Observations per Taxon or Total Observations per taxon can be slow, potentially requiring many API calls. Give these options time to load.
  • Exclude observations you've already looked at by setting Reviewed to no, and adding your username as the reviewer.
