Metzgeria and Metzgeria 1a hairs on upper surface > Apometzgeria pubescens

Synonym: Apometzgeria pubescens (Shrank.) Kuwah.

Special status: None.

Recognition: The narrow ribbons, one cell thick with a discrete midrib, are distinctive for the genus. Presence of short hairs densely covering the upper surface distinguishes the species.

Distribution: Grows on bark or rock; in cool, moist forest at low elevations in western Oregon. Rare, distribution spotty.

Comments: Most contemporary works treat this species in a separate genus, Apometzgeria. Bakalin recognizes this segregation in his Flora of North America treatment (Bakalin 2019). Work using molecular data shows that the species is phylogenetically nested within the genus Metzgeria which could justify retaining this in Metzgeria in a broader sense (Fuselier et al. 2011).
