Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Clevea hyalina (Sommerf.) Lindb.

HOME         SPECIES INDEX         GENUS INDEX         GLOSSARY

1a plants thallose > 2b chloroplasts numerous > 62b thallus tissue complex > 70b terrestrial > 72b pores differentiated > 73b gemmae absent > 75b trigones small or absent > 77a pores stellate > 78a ventral scales conspicuous > Athalamia hyalina

Synonym: Athalamia hyalina (Sommerf.) Hatt.

Special status: None

Recognition: The most distinguishing feature is the position of the carpocephalum in the center of the thallus, not developing from the apex or margin. Long, white scale appendages at the thallus apex are a good clue. Under the microscope the stellate-thickened walls surrounding the pores are diagnostic.

Distribution: On soil of ledges and under rock overhangs; throughout the state at all elevations.

Comments: This is one of the most common thalloid liverworts of upland habitats, not quite as common as Asterella gracilis. This species is treated in the genus Athalamia in most contemporary literature but a recent molecular study of the phylogeny of the Cleveaceae has shown that it should be returned to Clevea (Rubasinghe et al. 2011).
