HOME         SPECIES INDEX         GENUS INDEX         GLOSSARY

1b plants leafy > 3b leaves not divided, not ciliate > 6a oil bodies 2+ or unknown > 7b no small dorsal lobe > 10b leaves incubous > 20b lobule absent > 23b lobule absent > 24b leaves 2-3 dentate > Bazzania 1b caducous leaves absent > Bazzania tricrenata

Synonym: None

Special status: None

Recognition: Leaves not caducous, distinctly brownish in color; oilbodies 2-4 per cell, mostly spherical and glistening; underleaf margins very irregular, the underleaves wider than long. Leaf marginal cells much smaller than median cells.

Distribution: On trees or coarse woody debris; coastal, rare. Circumboreal.

Comments: The major problem is determining whether this occurs in Oregon at all. I've not seen it, everything I've collected being either B. denudata or B. ambigua. Not both collected together, however, as in Alaska. Collections from Oregon seen by me have all proven to be one or the other of the two species with caducous leaves and none are B. tricrenata. Because of the unreliability of identifications by Clark and Frye, specimens from Waldport & Port Orford cited by Clark & Frye (1934) should be searched for at WTU to verify being correctly identified. Until authentic specimens from Oregon are verified, historical records should not be accepted.
