Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Cephalozia catenulata (Hueb.) Lindb.
HOME SPECIES INDEX GENUS INDEX GLOSSARY
Cephalozia 1b sinus <0.5 of leaf > Cephalozia 7b perianth ciliate; cells less than 20 or more than 30 μm at lobe base > Cephalozia 9 leaf cells small > Cephalozia catenulata
Cephalozia catenulata (Hueb.) Lindb.
Synonym: Fuscocephaloziopsis catenulata (Hueb.) Váňa & L. Sõderstr.
Special Status: Uncertain; it may be rare or may be occasional.
Recognition: Distinguished by the shallowly bilobed leaves with very small leaf cells; if cell size is not measured it will pass for C. lunulifolia.
Distribution: On mostly organic substrates; apparently rare as I have seen only a single authentic specimen from Douglas County, Oregon.
Comments: This species was excluded from the California liverwort flora by Doyle and Stotler (2006) but they do include it in their key. Sotler and Crandall-Stotler (2017) place this species in Fuscocephaloziopsis, a genus that includes most of the traditional Cephaloziaceae according to the concept of Váňa and Sõderstrõm.
