Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Cephalozia loitlesbergii Schiffn.
HOME SPECIES INDEX GENUS INDEX GLOSSARY
Cephalozia 1b sinus <0.5 of leaf > Cephalozia 7b perianth ciliate; cells less than 20 or more than 30 μm at lobe base > Cephalozia 9b cells more than 30 μm at lobe base > Cephalozia 10a 2-3 cells at lobe tips > Cephalozia loitlesbergii
Synonym: Fuscocephaloziopsis loitlesbergerii (Schiffn.) Váňa & L. Sõderstr..
Special Status: None; poorly known, needs to be evaluated for conservation concern.
Recognition: From C. lunulifolia and C. connivens this is distinguished by lobe tips terminating in 2-3 cells end to end. Lobe tips have a slender, spine-like appearance. C. lunulifolia and C. connivens have only one or two cells at lobe tips.
Distribution: On rotten wood or maybe on dense, peaty substrate; in Oregon known only from a tentative field report, never confirmed. Circumboreal; not threatened in Europe (Schumacker and Vana 2005).
Comments: I have not seen this in the field. Sotler and Crandall-Stotler (2017) place this species in Fuscocephaloziopsis, a genus concept includes most of the traditional Family Cephaloziaceae.
