Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Cephalozia macounii (Aust.) Aust.
HOME SPECIES INDEX GENUS INDEX GLOSSARY
Cephalozia 1a sinus >0.5 of leaf > Cephalozia 2a cells at lobe base <25μ wide > Cephalozia 3b leaves not wider than stem > Cephalozia 4b lobes 2-3 cells wide > C. macounii
Synonym: None.
Special Status: None.
Recognition: A small cephalozia with small leaves, the leaves remote to contiguous, deeply bilobed, the sinus more than .6 of the leaf. The lobes narrow, only 2-3 cells wide at the base. The leaf cells averaging less than 25 μm wide.
Distribution: Found on decaying wood or similar dense organic substrates. Reported from British Columbia, documented here from Washington, and to be expected maybe in northern Oregon.
Comments: Note the small cells of the leaves on the Norris collection from Snohomish County, Washington. In this specimen the stem cells are relatively short rectangular compared to typical C. bicuspidata and related species. This may prove to be a useful identification feature.
