Synonyms: Lophocolea cuspidata (Nees) Limpr.; Chiloscyphus cuspidatus (Nees) J.J. Engel & R.M. Schust.; Chiloscyphus coadunatus (Sw.) J.J. Engel et R.M. Schust.
Special Status: None.
Recognition: The horizontally-inserted, bilobed leaves with acuminate lobe tips are distinctive under the handlens.
Distribution: On rotten wood or organic substrates; widespread and common.
Comments:In most literature prior to 1985, when Engel and Schuster combined Lophocolea with Chiloscyphus, this was known as Lophocolea cuspidata. Paton (1999) treated this as a synonym of Lophocolea bidentata (L.) Dum., without recognizing any subspecific taxa. Doyle and Stotler (2006) and Atherton et al. (2010) follow her example. The recent publication by Stotler and Crandall-Stotler (2017) provides nomenclatural clarity for separating Lophocolea coadunata from Lophocolea bidentata.
Schofield (2002) lists only Lophocolea cuspidata from the Pacific Northwest
Damsholt (2002) treats the two taxa as separate species of Chiloscyphus: C. coadunatus (Sw.) Engel et Schust. and C. latifolius (Nees) Engel et Schust. See Stotler and Crandall-Stotler (2017) for the nomenclatural history.
