Synonym: Chiloscyphus profundus (Nees) J.J. Engel et R.M. Schust.

Recognition: If bidentate leaves are noticed, this is easy to identify with a handlens in the field. However, in some plants only the smallest, juvenile leaves witll be bidentate, with most leaves being entire or merely retuse. These plants closely resemble Chiloscyphus pallescens; distinction will be made only upon careful inspection.
Distribution: On logs and organic litter; widespread from low to middle elevations.
Comments: A common form in our area has leaves almost always entire except on depauperate shoots, and also has fertile shoots on short lateral branches. This can be called Lophocolea heterophylla var. cladogyna R.M. Schust.
