Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Jungermannia atrovirens Dumort.

HOME         SPECIES INDEX         GENUS INDEX         GLOSSARY

Synonyms: Solenostoma atrovirens (Dumort.) Műll. Frib.; Jungermannia tristis Nees; Aplozia riparia (Taylor) Dumort.

Misapplied: Metasolenostoma orientale Bakalin et Vilnet; Wagner 1159, illustrated below, is cited as a paratype of this species (Bakalin, V.A., A. Vilnet, T. Furuki, & T. Katagiri 2014).

Two other specimens cited as paratypes of Metasolenostoma orientale are referred to either Solenostoma rubrum (Halse 5804) or Solenostoma fusiforme (Brinda 2836), also illustrated by photomicrographs.

Special Status: None.

Recognition: Medium sized plants with round, succubous leaves which do not clasp the stem. It is dioicous; its perianths are exserted and fusiform or ovoid but not beaked. Presence of gametangia is frequent.

Distribution: On wet rocks close to running water where frequently submerged or splashed; in Coast Range and Cascade Mountains; not uncommon. Reported from Saddle Mountain, Clatsop County (Schofield 1978); Larch Mountain, Multnomah Co. (Miller and Shushan 1964); Silver Creek, Marion County, coll. Foster, 1910 (Frye and Clark 1943, confirmed by Schuster 1969, p. 931).

Comments: Taxonomy of this species and its close relatives has been rather confusing. At present the traditional name used here, Jungermannia atrovirens, is recommended by Stotler and Crandall-Stotler (2017) and also used in the draft treatment in the Flora of North America vol. 29. Clark and Frye's treatments of jungermanniaceous liverworts are completely unreliable. There are few specimens to reexamine in their herbarium at WTU. For this reason the report of this species (as Aplozia riparia) from Crater Lake (Clark and Frye 1934) is rejected as dubious. See Jungermannia schusteriana J.D. Godfrey & G. Godfrey for a discussion of the liverworts in and around Waldo Lake.
