Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Solenostma confertissimum (Nees) Schljakov./Solenostoma sphaerocarpum (Hook.) Steph.
HOME SPECIES INDEX GENUS INDEX GLOSSARY
Synonym: Jungermannia confertissima Nees/Jungermannia sphaerocarpa Hook.
Special Status: None; no data available for consideration.
Recognition: Doyle and Stotler (2006) compare these paroicous species, J. confertissima and J. sphaerocarpa. The former is distinguished by having reniform, not circular leaves.
Distribution: Not yet known from Oregon; expected on moist soil at high elevations.
Comments: Both of these species have been reported from California (Doyle and Stotler 2006) on the basis of a single authentic specimen citation each. I have not seen authentic material of either of these species from Oregon. We need a handful of specimens with male shoots and or paroicous female shoots to verify their occurrence in the Cascades or NE Oregon mountains. Sterile specimens could be sought here but are more likely to be mistaken for J. atrovirens, J. exsertifolia, or J. hyalina. These three are aquatic, not terrestrial like Solenostma confertissimum and Solenostoma sphaerocarpum.
