Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Solenostoma obscurum (A. Evans) R.M. Schust.

HOME         SPECIES INDEX         GENUS INDEX         GLOSSARY

Synonyms: Jungermannia evansii Váňa; Nardia obscura A. Evans; Plectocolea obscura (A. Evans) A. Evans in Buch, A. Evans et Verdoorn.

Special Status: None.

Recognition: Very close to J. hyalina, from which it is distinguished by purple rhizoids and a very short perianth Schuster (1969). I have not seen it. Bakalin (2016) mentions leaves being "dorsally shortly, but distinctly decurrent" and "cuticle distinctly papillose ... in proximal 1/3."

Distribution: Only three records from Oregon, two doubtful and whose voucher specimens have not been located despite attempts to locate them.

Comments: I include this species here on the basis of literature reports. The Sanborn record, "Near a spring, on the moist dripping banks facing the ocean, Lighthouse Beach, Coos Bay" (Sanborn, 1929), and the Miller and Sushan (1964) record "Oswald West State Park, ca 100 feet, Tillamook County. 45 º 43' N, 123 º 54' W" I suspect of being either J. hyalina or J. rubra. Vana and Hong (1999) report a collection (Jonsson 2194, OSC) from the Andrews Experimental Forest in Lane County. A careful search of packets filed under J. rubra might turn up a few records of this species. Bakalin (2016) uses Plectocolea obscura while Stotler & Crandall-Stotler (2017) prefer Solenostoma obscurum.
