Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Solenostoma fusiforme (Steph.) R.M. Schust.

HOME         SPECIES INDEX         GENUS INDEX         GLOSSARY

Synonym: Jungermannia fusiformis (Steph.) Steph. Protosolenostoma fusiforme (Steph.) Bakalin et Vilnet

Misapplied: Metasolenostoma orientale Bakalin et Vilnet. A specimen from California, illustrated below (Brinda 2836), is cited as a paratype of this species (Bakalin, V.A., A. Vilnet, T. Furuki, & T. Katagiri 2014).

Two other specimens cited as paratypes of Metasolenostoma orientale are referred to Solenostoma rubrum (Halse 5408) or Jungermannia atrovirens (Wagner 1159), also illustrated by photomicrographs.

Special Status: Possible candidate for sensitive species status; only recently located in Oregon. Only a few sites are known.

Recognition: Strictly aquatic on rocks in small streams; leaves ovate, nearly transversely inserted, bright green, often with reddish tinge; marginal cells usually differentiated by dark but not thickened walls; oil bodies few, fusiform. 3X chloroplasts, 2 (3) per cell, mostly subbotryoidal, of small spherules.

Distribution: On rocks in streams at high elevations.

Comments: The leaf shape and large size distinguishes this from most other aquatic or amphibious species of Jungermannia. The closest look alike is Jungermannia exsertifolia, which has darker leaves tending to be widest near the base and rounded triangular.

This plant is not known to have reproductive organs in western North America records. Because traditional keys like these are based on features of reproductive organs, it cannot be keyed out easily. It must first be learned from studying the pictures, which is not hard to do.
