Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Jungermannia pumila With.

HOME         SPECIES INDEX         GENUS INDEX         GLOSSARY

Synonym: Solenostoma pumilum (With.) Müll. Frib.

Special Status: None.

Recognition:Medium sized; succubous, non clasping, narrow, elleptical to oval leaves on sterile shoots; paroicous; perianths exserted, fusiform or ovoid but not beaked

Distribution: In water, amphibious or nearly completely aquatic; distribution unclear because of confusion with similar species such as J. atrovirens; reported from Saddle Mountain, Clatsop County (Schofield 1978); without specimen citation Schuster (1969, p. 913) says, "In North America widespread in the West (Alberta and British Columbia southward to California and Colorado)..."

Comments: Plants with small, round, overlapping, concave leaves were formerly treated as a variety of this species but it is now generally recognized at the species level (Bakalin 2011). This species has not yet been incorporated into keys because it has not been found with reproductive structures. See: J. polaris Lindb.
