Barbilophozia floerkii

Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Barbilophozia floerkii (Web. et Mohr) Loeske

HOME         SPECIES INDEX         GENUS INDEX         GLOSSARY

Synonym: Lophozia floerkii (Web. et Mohr) Schiffn. Neoorthocaulis floerkii (Web. et Mohr) L. Söderstr., De Roo & Hedd.

Special Status: ORBIC List 2

Recognition: This species consistently has three lobed leaves, a defining character of Barbilophozia. It is very similar to, and much less common than, B. hatcheri. The cilia at the base of the leaves are made up of short rectangular cells and often reduced to blunt teeth in comparison to B. hatcheri. The teeth of the prominent underleaves are likewise not drawn out as much.

Distribution: Grows on rock; presently known only from two collections, one from Proxy Falls, Lane County, made by D. Kofranek and the other from Tidbits Mountain.

Comments: Only recently found in Oregon. Likely to be found in the northern part of the Cascade Mountains in Oregon and on Mt. Hood.

Stotler and Crandall-Stotler (2017) accepted placing his species in the genus Neoorthocaulis L. Söderstrom, De Roo & Hedderson. Its similarity to B. hatcheri convinces me to retain it in Barbilophozia Loeske. It has previously been treated as Lophozia subgenus Orthocaulis (Buch) Schust., distinct from subgenus Barbilophozia (Loeske) K. Muell. (Schuster, 1969, p. 300). Stotler and Crandall-Stotler recognize Orthocaulis Buch at the generic level, distinct from Neoorthocaulis.
