Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Riccia beyrichiana Hampe ex Lehm.
HOME SPECIES INDEX GENUS INDEX GLOSSARY
Riccia 1 terrestrial > Riccia 2a marginal projections present > Riccia 3b marginal cilia only > Riccia 4a marginal cilia not clustered > Riccia beyrichiana
Synonym: None.
Special Status: None.
Recognition: Thalli with a shallow, flat groove formed between swollen, raised margins. When plants are well developed the marginal cilia help characterize this species.
Distribution: Seasonally wet soil; reported from scattered locations across the state.
Comments: This species may not always have prominent cilia; comparison of spore morphology must be relied upon for confident identification. The specimen from Pine Creek, Modoc County, California, illustrated below (DHW m1462), was verified by William Doyle. The Coyote Prairie, Lane County, material matches it well in general appearance but it did not have spores. The site should be revisited later in the year to look for mature sporangia.
