HOME         SPECIES INDEX         GENUS INDEX         GLOSSARY

Riccia 1b terrestrial > Riccia 2b marginal projections lacking > Riccia 5a surface spongiose > Riccia 6a surface conspicuously spongiose > Riccia cavernosa

Synonym: Riccia crystallina auct. non L.

Special Status: None.

Recognition: The strongly spongiose upper surface is distinctive; R. frostii also has a spongiose surface but not as conspicuous; R. cavernosa is monoicous while R. frostii is dioicous.

Distribution: On soil; in all parts of the state.

Comments: The spongiose surface provides a means of identifying even very young specimens. Note that specimens of this species have frequently been misidentified in the past as R. frostii or misnamed R. crystallina.
