HOME         SPECIES INDEX         GENUS INDEX         GLOSSARY

Riccia 1b terrestrial > Riccia 2b marginal projections lacking > Riccia 5b surface smooth > Riccia 7b upper surface groove shallow > Riccia 8a ventral scales black > Riccia nigrella

Synonym: None.

Special Status: None.

Recognition: Small even for a Riccia, the black ventral scales are diagnostic. When the plants dry out, the sides curl up so that black undersides are brought together and they look like little black lines in the soil.

Distribution: Grows on bare mineral soil moist all winter, somewhat weedy; SW Oregon to California.

Comments: Likely to be found occasionally as more people look for ephemeral mosses and liverworts.
