Scapania 1 oil bodies solitary > Scapania gymnostomophila

Synonym: None.

Special Status: ORBIC List 2.

Recognition: Small for a Scapania, with leaf lobes not as tightly folded as is typical for the genus. The outstanding distinguishing feature of this species is the presence of large, brown, solitary oilbodies which persist for years.

Distribution: Grows on rock; in Oregon known only from Columbia River Gorge cliffs.

Comments: In other parts of its range, this is described as a calcicole (Paton 1999).

Multnomah Co., Oregon. DHW 2249 (Dorsal view. Note: Specimen preserved in glycerine, which has caused oilbodies to dissipate.)
