Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Scapania oakesii Aust.
HOME SPECIES INDEX GENUS INDEX GLOSSARY
Go to Scapania undulata for discussion of this species.
Synonym: Scapania undulata var. oakesii (Aust.) Buch
Special Status: None.
Recognition: Found on mineral soil in the company of Gyrothyra, Jungermannia rubra and Cephaloziella turneri, this is a small Scapania with strongly dentate leaf lobes. It has the general characters of Scapania undulata but differs in size, habitat, and subtle leaf shape difference.
Distribution: On soil, mostly near the coast.
Comments: This species has been treated as a subspecific taxon of Scapania undulata. The form found in the Pacific Northwest which grows on mineral soil is certainly distinctive. It may not match the type of Austin's species, in which case a new name will need to be published.
The specimens from Lincoln County were stained with methylene blue to enhance contrast.
