Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Scapania uliginosa (Lindenb.) Dumort.

HOME         SPECIES INDEX         GENUS INDEX         GLOSSARY

Scapania 1 oil bodies several per cell > Scapania 2b marginal teeth evenly spaced or lacking > Scapania 3a dorsal lobe decurrent > Scapania 4b keel strongly curved > Scapania paludosa

Synonym: Scapania paludosa (Müll. Frib.) Müll. Frib.

Special Status: None, rare. Should be submitted for listing.

Recognition: Growing in or next to running water; usually purple red; with strongly arching keel; dorsal lobe decurrent, ventral lobe long decurrent.

Distribution: On peat in fens or boggy sites; high mountains.

Comments: To be distinguished from edentate forms of Scapania undulata by the arching keel. Both grow in similar habitats. Scapania undulata is much more common.

In previous versions of this Guide, this was listed as Scapania paludosa, with photogmicrographs of the Mesa Creek specimens placed under Scapania undulata. The confusion arose because of the difficulty of naming these specimens as either Scapania paludosa or Scapania uliginosa using references such as Paton (1999) or Damsholt (2002.) Here I recognize the synonymy of these two as proposed by Potemkin (2020) and place both under Scapania uliginosa, which has priority.
