Special Status: None.
Recognition: Small thalli with black sides are a good clue; the bi-valved involucre on the ventral side of thallus tips are diagnostic and usually present. One of only two regional species with bulging trigones in the dorsal epidermis.
Distribution: On soil, road cuts, ledges and under overhangs of cliffs; widspread at low to middle elevations; fairly common.
Comments: This is one of the most common thalloid liverworts of soil that dries out by mid summer; frequent cohabitants are Asterella spp. and Fossombronia spp.
