Recognition: This species is recognizeable only to genus in the field. Under the microscope the basal marginal border of thin walled, rectangular cells is shared only by Racomitrium varium. From this, Racomitrium fasciculare differs in the much flatter costa: two cells thick throughout the lower part of the leaf, sometimes unevenly three cells thick at very base. The peristome teeth of this species are only about 0.6 mm long, much shorter than the 1.0+ mm teeth of Codriophorus varius.
Distribution: According to Bednarek-Ochyra (2006) this has been found on Mt. Hood in northern Oregon. Only recently has it been found in Tillamook County. Although not noted in the Flora of North America (Ochyra and Bednarek-Ochyra 2007) it has been reported from California (Norris and Shevock 2004a).
Comments: This species has proven to be elusive to find in Oregon. The first specimen I have encountered that gave the first impression of being R. fasciculare turned out to be the muticous form of R. varium.
