Synonym: Marsupella emarginata (Ehrh.) Dum. var. aquatica (Lindenb.) Dum.
Special Status: ORBIC List 2.
Recognition: This species is distinguished in the field from Marsupella emarginata by its dark color and aquatic habitat. It also has larger, more rotund leaves with a shallower sinus than Marsupella emarginata.
Distribution: Strictly aquatic, growing on rocks in the bottom of swift, old streams; in Oregon known only from the outlet stream of Waldo Lake.
Comments: The habitat needs to be further explored. The closest locality currently known is in Washington State.
There have been differing views about whether this should be treated at species level or as a variety or subspecies. The aquatic plants in the Waldo Lake area are very distinctive. There is molecular phylogenetic evidence that supports treating this taxon at the species level (Vilnet et al., 2009).
