Special Status: ORBIC List 2.
Recognition: Tiny, dark brown to black plants with leaf bases that are often slightly sheathing; with a distinct perianth that is included within the bracts and a perigynium only 0.2 of the perianth; leaves bilobed to 0.35, the sinus generally appearing more deep than other tiny species. Leaf lobe apex round. Paroicous, with antheridia maturing before archegonia.
Distribution: On soil or rock in subalpine to alpine zone; from California northwards.
Comments: Only one verified record from Oregon, on Mt. Hood. Only recently found in California.
