Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Calypogeia neesiana (Mass. & Carest.) K. Muell.
HOME SPECIES INDEX GENUS INDEX GLOSSARY
Calypogeia 1b oil bodies colorless > Calypogeia 2b underleaves entire to emarginate > Calypogeia 6a underleaf marginal cells short > Calypogeia neesiana
Synonym: None.
Special status: None, but if presence in Oregon can be verified the species should be listed.
Recognition: Very close to C. muelleriana, from which it may be distinguished by having nearly entire underleaves whose marginal cells are somewhat elongated, forming a border. Calypogeia integristipula also has nearly entire underleaves, but the marginal cells are only sporadically elongated, with isodiametric cells interspersed (Doyle and Stotler 2006). Median leaf cells and most underleaf cells typically lack oil bodies in C. neesiana while C. integristipula has oil bodies in all these cells (Damsholt 2002).
Distribution: Grows on organic substrate in cool and moist habitats; exact distribution to be determined.
Comments: There is a record in Neskowin Crest Research Natural Area, Supplement #13 to Federal Research Natural Areas in Oregon and Washington: A Guidebook for Scientists and Educators by Franklin, Hall, Dyrness and Maser. The specimen was collected by G. LaRoi, i.d. by Diana Horton and deposited at ALTA. I have a specimen collected in the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness which is intermediate between this and C. integristipula. I think it is closer to the latter; see that species for drawings of the plant.
