Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Calypogeia sphagnicola (Arn. & Perss.) Warnst. & Loeske

HOME         SPECIES INDEX         GENUS INDEX         GLOSSARY

Calypogeia 1b oil bodies colorless > Calypogeia 2a underleaves bifid > Calypogeia 3b less than 2.5 mm wide > Calypogeia 4b cells less than 50 μm wide > Calypogeia 5a growing on Sphagnum > Calypogeia sphagnicola

Synonym: None.

Special status: ORBIC List 2.

Recognition: Best recognized by its habitat, on Sphagnum, where one finds lax, remote-leaved shoots tangled among the capitula of Sphagnum. The oil bodies are composed of only a few, large segments. Median leaf cells are fairly large, usually more than 40 μm long. Calypogeia fissa is similar in appearance but shoots are larger with leaves closer together. Its cells are larger, greater than 50 μm vs. less than 50 μm in C. sphagnicola. It is important to measure cells in the middle of mature leaves, as mid-leaf cells on small shoots of C. fissa may be in the size range of C. sphagnicola.

Distribution: On Sphagnum; in coastal and montane bogs; rare. Found in Clackamas, Coos, Curry, Douglas, Lane, Lincoln, Linn, and Tillamook Counties.

Comments: Our material seems to have more oilbodies per cell than Schuster (1969) describes for material from eastern North America. Note that Damsholt (2002) mentions that a thick-celled form (mod. pachyderma) has 4-12 oilbodies per cell. The leaf cells of our material are rather large, also, which makes confusion with C. fissa likely.
