HOME         SPECIES INDEX         GENUS INDEX         GLOSSARY

Calypogeia 1b oil bodies colorless > Calypogeia 2a underleaves bifid > Calypogeia 3b less than 2.5 mm wide > Calypogeia 4b cells less than 50 μm wide > Calypogeia 5b growing on wood > Calypogeia suecica

Synonym: None.

Special status: Deserves status as rare in Oregon.

Recognition: Small plants with small leaf cells, mostly less than 30 μm in the middle of mature leaves, and underleaves which are much wider than the stem. The underleaves are shaped much like those of C. fissa except the "shoulders" are often so pronounced so that each lobe of an underleaf is almost rectangular.

Distribution: Grows on decaying wood; only one specimens seen from Oregon; verified from Washington and presumably more common there and northward.

Comments: Schuster (1969, p. 146) says, "...in the West [south] to California." Frye and Clark (1937-1947) cite specimens from Washington and California. Doyle and Stotler (2006) found the Frye and Clark specimen cited as from California is based on a small specimen of C. fissa. Otherwise, they could find no specimens from California although they suggest it might be expected. Hong (1990) mentions OR under distribution and has two dots located in OR on the distribution map, but cites no specimens to document. I hadn't seen it from OR until good material from Lane County was forwarded to me by Tom Rambo in 1997. That collection remains the only authentic record for the state. It was found at ca. 2,400' elevation in a Douglas-fir forest, close to a small stream.
