Chiloscyphus coadunatus; Coos Co., Oregon. DHW 9330.

38a Plants small to large, normal shoots mostly much more than 1 mm wide; bi- or trilobed
(Couplet 39)

Cephaloziella divaricata, Malakof Diggings, Nevada County, California. C. Beyer 7051.

38b Plants minute to very small, healthy shoots averaging less than 0.5 mm wide (excluding stray, depauperate strands); leaves bilobed or notched.
(Couplet 47)

Note: this choice leads to part of the key (couplets 47-54) intended for use with plants whose average size is less than 0.5 mm in diameter and whose maximum size is less than one millimeter across. Most leafy liverworts can produce juvenile or depauperate strands in this size range, so stray strands mixed in with other plants might not key very well here. This section of the general key is most reliable with healthy tufts of clearly small liverworts.
