HOME SPECIES INDEX GENUS INDEX GLOSSARY
1b plants leafy > 3b leaves not divided, not ciliate > 6a oil bodies 2+ or unknown > 7b no small dorsal lobe > 10a succubous > 11a anisophyllous > 12a leaves unlobed > 28a underleaves inconspicuous > 29b if rhizoids red, stems red > 30b leaf plane or evenly curved > 31b trigones concave; male bracts toothed > Jamesoniella autumnalis
Synonym: Jamesoniella autumnalis (DC.) Steph.
Special Status: None.
Recognition: Unless fertile, this is very difficult to distinguish from Jungermannia, especially Jungermannia leiantha. Syzygiella occasionally has retuse leaf tips, a feature shared with Jungermannia leiantha. When sterile, the occasional development of underleaves helps to distinguish Syzygiella. Leaf cells of Syzygiella lack strongly bulging trigones. The perianth mouth of Syzygiella is dentate-ciliate while in Jungermannia the perianth mouth is entire or barely dentate. Jungermannia leiantha is paroicous, with entire male bracts subtending the perianth. Syzygiella is dioicous with both male and female bracts being toothed or even laciniate on the dorsal margin.
Distribution: On logs, rotting wood; throughout the state in moist habitats, more common northwards, I've not seen it in the southern 1/2 of the state.
Comments: Often developing reddish coloration.
Sotler and Crandall-Stotler (2017) explain that the genus Jamesoniella has been found to be in the same genus as Syzygiella. Because Syzygiella is the older name, it has priority. Future floristic works will be using the older genus name.
