Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Lophozia ventricosa var. longiflora (Nees) Macoun
HOME SPECIES INDEX GENUS INDEX GLOSSARY
Lophozia 1b oil bodies less than 12 per cell > Lophozia 5b leaves bilobed > Lophozia 8b underleaves absent > Lophozia 12b dioicous > Lophozia 14a gemmae greenish > Lophozia 16b shoots mostly prostrate > Lophozia 17b perianth mouth ciliate > Lophozia longiflora
Synonym: Lophozia guttulata (Lindb. & Arnell) A. Evans; Lophozia longiflora (Nees) Schiffn.
Special Status: None.
Recognition: Medium sized plants with bilobed leaves, the sinus shallow and usually rounded, with no underleaves. Perianth mouth with teeth mainly 2-4 cells long; cells usually with large, bulging trigones; gemmae few or absent; oil bodies usually 5-10 per cell.
It is similar to var. ventricosa, which differs in having abundant gemmae and a merely dentate perianth mouth. The best differentiating character is 10-15 oil bodies in var. ventricosa vs. only 5-10 in var. longiflora. Although var. longiflora is known for bulging trigones, as described and figured in Paton (1999), this may occasionally be seen in var. ventricosa in our area and is not a good distinguishing character.
Distribution: On rotting wood or peaty soil at higher elevations; not common in Oregon.
Comments: More abundant northward.
