Guide to Liverworts of Oregon: Barbilophozia lycopodioides (Wallr.) Loeske
HOME SPECIES INDEX GENUS INDEX GLOSSARY
Lophozia 1b oil bodies less than 12 per cell > Lophozia 5a leaves 3-4 lobed > Lophozia 6b underleaves prominent > Barbilophozia 7b shoots over 3 mm wide > B. lycopodioides
Synonym: Lophozia lycopodioides (Wallr.) Loeske
Special Status: ORBIC List 2.
Recognition: This is the most robust species of the genus Barbilophozia. It is very similar to B. hatcheri, from which it differs in being larger and having more elongate basal cilia composed of much longer cells. Optimally developed specimens of B. hatcheri have been misidentified as B. lycopodioides in the past. Confirmation of the rare species should be done by comparison with authentic material.
Distribution: On rotting wood or well-decayed organic material, in Baker and Linn County (according to ORNHIC 2004). Note that Hong (1978) said that his Anthony Lake collection was from Grant County; however Anthony Lakes are in Baker County.
Comments: I have seen neither the Baker County nor Linn County specimens and, because this species has been so often misidentified in the past, would suggest holding both records suspect until verified by expert re-examination.
