Synonym: None.

Special Status: None.

Recognition: These are small to medium plants, similar in size to M. emarginata and growing in the same habitat as that. They can be distinguished by the deeper sinus of M. sphacelata and the absence of elongated cells at the base of the largest vegetative leaves. Usually at least some leaves of M. emarginata are recurved.

Distribution: Usually on rock in streambeds or sites that dry out late in the season, rarely perennially submerged; restricted to subalpine to alpine habitats, California northwards.

Comments: This is a fairly common species at higher elevations of the subalpine zone of the Oregon Cascades.
