Synonym: Cladopodiella fluitans (Nees) H. Buch
Special Status: None.
Recognition: Small, greenish to dark purple plants with bilobed leaves. The lobes are usually rounded at the tip; the sinus acute to rounded. Sterile material very similar to forms of Gymnocolea inflata, from which it differs in having more regularly produced underleaves (best seen at shoot apex), larger leaf cells (to 45 μm in Cladopodiella but not larger than 35 μm in Gymnocolea inflata), regular production of leafless, ventral branches, and leaves which are distinctly longer than wide (while usually about as long as wide in Gymnocolea inflata).
Distribution: In bogs and similar wetlands, typically mixed with other bryophytes; from Washington State northwards.
Comments: Schofield (2002) lists Oregon in the in the range of Cladopodiella but I can find no report to confirm.
